Ruby-Birthstone-July



The modern gemstone for the Month of July is the stunning Ruby.  The Ruby is a beautiful gemstone that is part of the mineral family Corundum. Corundum is found within crystals of metamorphic rock and is considered to be the second hardest mineral next to Diamonds. Corundums come in different varieties and can be considered a Sapphire in different colors. A ruby has been called the "Lord of the Gems" due to its beauty and rarity and it's name is derived from Latin word "ruber" for Ruby.

RubyIn folklore and legend the ruby holds a premiere spot.  The ruby was thought to have mystical powers and was often worn as a Talisman to ward off great evil.    The ruby's color was often associated with blood and was thought to have the ability to stop bleeding and to heal ailments associated with it.  In the Book of Exodus, the ruby was worn into battle and was seen on the Breastplate of Aaron as a sign of courage.  The Hindu religion see the ruby as the highest offering that can be given to Krishna.

With its protective powers, the ruby is valued by thier owners as a protector of misfortune in life and property.  The red glow from the ruby was seen as an "eternal flame" that could never be extinquished and was valued as a symbol of love.  Often seen as a precious stone of great powers in movies.

Some of the best Rubies are in true red and come from Burma. They can also be found in other areas throughout the world, such as Australia, Kenya, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and the United States. With its well known sturdiness, it makes a perfect gemstone for jewelry. Often seen set with sapphires and diamonds, it is a perfect stone to pair up.  Listed on the Moh's scale of hardness as a 9.
